Ref: 1249

Mary (1553-1558), ruling alone (1553-1554), silver Groat, i.m. pomegranate, crowned bust of Mary left, legend around MARIA D G ANG' FRA' Z HIB' REGI' (Mary by the Grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland), reverse long cross fourchée over shield of royal arms, VERITAS TEMPORIS FILIA around (Truth is the daughter of Time) (N 1960; S 2492)

A strong very fine with a particularly good portrait

Notes: In 1554 Queen Mary married King Philip II of Spain, and issued coins in their joint names. This groat dated from the period when she ruled alone (1553-54). Historically she was bad news for English Protestants, going down in history as 'Bloody Mary', but she was good news for the English silver coinage, restoring silver to the Sterling standard.
