Notes: Sovereignty over the Falkland Islands had been disputed between Spain, Britain and Argentina for well over a century before Britain staked a definitive claim on New Year's Day 1833. On 1st April 1982 the fascist dictatorship of Argentina's General Galtieri invaded the Falklands, partly to divert domestic unrest through a populist gesture. In a bold move, British Premier Margaret Thatcher sent a Task Force to the South Atlantic, and the British armed services forced an Argentine surrender on 14th June after six weeks of intense combat. Well done all British forces involved - I remember you every year.
