Notes: The Jacobite army had reached as far as Derby in 1745, but then began the withdrawal to Scotland. The battle of Culloden itself was brief and decisive. Government losses were slight, official figures citing less than 60 men and officers killed, whilst the Jacobites lost somewhere in the region of 1500. The defeat at Culloden put paid to Charles Edward Stuart's desire of gaining the British throne, and he escaped to the Continent, living an unhappy life in exile. This medal is considered rare by Medallic Illustrations, which also refers to this as "the finest of the Culloden medals". It was sold at half a Guinea, and the medallist later became chief engraver at the Royal Mint.
