Notes: Uppingham School was founded in 1584 with a hospital, or almshouse, by Archdeacon Robert Johnson. The original 1584 Schoolroom still exists in Uppingham churchyard. The original hospital building is incorporated into the school's library. From its foundation until the mid-19th century the school remained small, with between 30-60 pupils and two teachers. From 1853 to 1887 the headmaster was Edward Thring (head at the time this medal was awarded). He transformed the school into the much larger school that it is today. These medals are rarely seen in the marketplace.
