| Ref: 1771 | George V (1910-1936), gold Sovereign 1925, bust left, rev St George (S 3996) As struck SOLD Notes: Sovereigns of 1925 have a higher rim than normal. The issue is subject to some speculation as sovereigns for everyday currency use were last issued in 1917. It is possible that these were released, if not issued, into the bullion markets by the Royal Mint between 1949 and 1952 - partly to meet demand and also to prevent the market in forgeries. What seems certain is that the old chestnut that these were struck during the Second World War and given to British and allied agents, or secret services operating behind enemy lines, is a myth. |
