Notes: No copper coins had been minted for Ireland since 1689, and thus by the 1720s the shortage of small change was keenly felt.. In 1722 a patent for minting copper coins for use in America and Ireland was granted to William Wood, a London merchant. They were struck at his Bristol foundry. For various reasons the Irish issues were not widely accepted in Ireland, and were recalled to be used in the American colonies.
