Notes: Probably part of a series of English worthies, the original Wedgwood portrait was modelled in 1779. John Locke (1632-1704), philosopher. He went into exile in the Netherlands, with his patron the Earl of Shaftesbury, during the reigns of Charles II and James II, returning to England with William of Orange in 1688.
