Notes: Jean Bart (1651-1702), rose from humble birth to the rank of admiral in the French navy. Dunkirk is best known to Britons as the scene of the heroic escape of the British Expeditionary Force from the Nazis in 1940 - the expression "Dunkirk spirit" still used occasionally today.
