Germany, Peace in Europe, bronze medal circa 1920

Obv: Peace raises up a mother and child, image of War in background, VAE VICTIS around

Rev: DER MENSCHHEIT IST IN EURE HAND GEGEBEN BEWAHRET SIE in field, names of European cities around

Condition: Good very fine; Diameter: 51mm

References: none found

Notes: "Vae victis" means 'woe to the vanquished' and was uttered by the Gaul Brennus as he held Rome to ransom in 327 BC. "Der menschheit wurde ist in eure hand gegeben bewahret sie" is a quotation from German playwright and poet Friedrich Schiller (1789) and means "The dignity of humanity is in your hands, protect it". The style of this medal places it at about 1920, and the context is presumably the end of the Great War. I have listed it as German, but it could conceivably be Austrian or even Swiss.
