Scotland, Edinburgh, Scottish Volunteers review by Queen Victoria 1881, bronze medal by D O Smith, in case of issue, very rare

 

Obv: diademed draped bust of Queen Victoria left, IN COMMEMORATION OF HER MAJESTY REVIEWING THE SCOTTISH VOLUNTEERS AT EDINBURGH AUG 25TH 1881 around

Rev: three volunteers (one in kilt) standing by a field gun IN DEFENCE below, laurel wreath around

 

Condition: good extremely fine with much original lustre; Diameter: 45mm

Notes: the Queen reviewed about 40,000 volunteer troops in Queen's Park, Edinburgh. Due to heavy rain the event was not a success as the area in front of the saluting flag became "a sea of mud and water" (The Times), and several casualties (including one death) occurred.
