General Strike Service Medal 1926, bronze medal by Ernest Gillick, in case of issue (inside lid lining a little distressed)

 

 

Obv: Britannia seated holds out a laurel, symbol of the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company between rose and thistle, FOR SERVICE IN NATIONAL EMERGENCY MAY 1926

 

Rev: three allegorical women with backs to each other hold two locomotives, Latin legend, the initial letter of each word signalling LMSR (initials of the railway company)

 

Condition: Extremely fine; Diameter: 51mm

Notes: the strike only lasted 9 days before ending in defeat for the unions. It was called in sympathy for the coal miners, but was defeated in no small part through the efforts of middle-class people volunteering to run essential services. This medal was struck by the Royal Mint and given to those who had volunteered with the LMSR.
