from West's The Death of General Wolfe, exhibited at the Royal Academy
in 1771. General James Wolfe was mortally wounded on 13th September 1759, just
as British troops vanquished the French at Quebec. The British army had
scaled the cliffs from the St Lawrence River and surprised the French on the
Plains of Abraham. Benjamin West himself was in fact American but settled in
London, patronised by George III and becoming president of the Royal Academy. Price
