Notes: Gerald de Barri (c.1146-1223) was born in Manorbier Castle, South Pembrokeshire, to William de Barri and Angharad, daughter of Gerald de Windsor and Nesta, a Welsh princess reknowned for her beauty (and lovers). He could thus claim to have both a Norman and Welsh inheritance. A man of ecclesiasical and scholarly inclination, he accompanied Prince John on a voyage to Ireland in 1185. He is principally known for his resulting Expugnatio Hibernica (The Conquest of Ireland) and Topographia Hibernica (The Topography of Ireland), completed in 1187, and his Itinerarium Kambriae (The Story of the Journey through Wales), and Descriprio Kambriae (A Description of Wales). These latter depict his travels through Wales in 1188 with Archbishop Baldwin, to generate support for a new crusade, after the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin the previous year.

This medal was designed by Karen Roberts of Platform One Design in Cwmbran, Wales. The medal was modelled by Robert Evans of the Royal Mint, which produced this medal for Cadw. This medal is very rare and is only the third example I have seen in over 30 years. The other two are in the Royal Mint collection and my own collection. In my opinion it’s in the top echelon of modern art medals.
