Strike Service Medal 1926, bronze medal by Ernest Gillick,
in case of issue, in Royal Mint posting box with addressee’s name and address, plus pro
forma letter from Sir Josiah Stamp dated January 1927 Obv: Britannia
seated holds out a laurel, symbol of the London Midland & Scottish
Railway Company between rose and thistle, FOR SERVICE IN NATIONAL EMERGENCY

three allegorical women with backs to each other hold two locomotives, Latin
legend, the initial letter of each word signalling LMSR (initials of the
railway company) Condition:

box lid label has a Royal Mint (i.e. at Tower Hill) stamp, with the addressee
typed as : B Harwood Esq., The Oaklands, Chedworth, Warwickshire, which address is crossed out and
replaced with a handwritten Station Rd, Stechford
(Number not known). Whilst the medal is not uncommon, it is
extremely rare to have all the associated items, especially the posting box. Notes:
the strike only lasted 9 days before ending in defeat for the unions. It was
called in sympathy for the coal miners, but was defeated in no small part
through the efforts of middle-class people volunteering to run essential
services. This medal was struck by the Royal Mint and given to those who had
volunteered with the LMSR. Price
