Notes: a Franco-Spanish fleet laid siege to Gibraltar from July 1779 through to February 1783, including a land assault on 13th September 1782 of 100,000 men, which the obverse depicts. General Eliott was governor of Gibraltar during the siege at the end of which Britain prevailed. The reverse refers to the three German commanders of the Hanoverian Brigade who defended Gibraltar alongside British troops. General Eliott awarded some 1200 of these medals to the Hanoverian troops.
